LLIBERT FORTUNY GASBAND (CATALONIA)

Llibert Fortuny is one of the most renowned jazz saxophonist and composer of the Catalan jazz scene nowadays. With a very distinctive style, mixing traditional jazz with electronic music, his music and live performances showcase an undeniable talent and a full on dedication, always looking to the future, in the quest for the innovation of the genre.

He started his music studies at seven years old, at the Manresa Conservatory. He soon learns to play sax and gets a grant to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studies with renowned musicians. It’s in the United States where he has the chance to share the stage with names like Chick Corea, Greg Hopkins Band and Boston Pops Orchestra. Back home in Cataluña, he is named as “the great hope of the Catalan jazz”. He builds up his experience as a musician taking part in numerous jam sessions, and he becomes one of the most active members of the Jamboree’s club WTF collective. In 2001 he creates his first musical project, the Llibert Fortuny Quartet, and his first record release gets a great response from the music press making him an important name in the local scene.

A long list of projects, collaborations and work fronting various bands have giving him the opportunity to experiment with jazz music from different angles and approaches, both technically and in the composition. He mixes tradition and avant garde in the construction of a complex new music which is, at the same time, very accessible.

Together with bassist Tito Bonacera and drummer David Gómez, Fortuny turns his Gasband into a monumental experimental ground where jazz, funk and rock music go together seasoned with a pinch of sense of humour and with the purpose of offering good quality entertainment. On the stage, the Gasband gets rid of any prejudices and opens up to freedom and improvisation so instinct and groove take over as the real protagonists.
