The Oslo-based drummer, vocalist and composer Siv Øyunn Kjenstad plays easily across many genres such as jazz, alternative pop/rock, contemporary and improvised music and electronica, bringing her warm sound, and her creative and spontaneous approach.
She started her professional career as a nineteen-year-old in the percussion ensemble Batagraf, under Norwegian jazz pianist and composer Jon Balke. Since then she has collaborated with numerous acclaimed musicians in Norway and internationally, including Bugge Wesseltoft’s New Conception of Jazz.
Currently she’s embarking on a solo project for the first time, writing and performing her music as Øyunn. The band was voted Band of the year by Norwegian newspaper Dagsavisen in 2015.
She is recognized by many for her characteristic, steady groove and the ability to listen and play with her co-musicians in an expressive, dynamic and organic way. In her live performances she alternates between composed material and the purely improvised, with a fondness for the frenetic polyrhythms prominent in West African music. Øyunn is an open landscape following an intuitive pattern. Her compositions are highly creative, exploring different themes and rhythms with spontaneity. Nordic jazz, alternative pop and West-African musical traditions can all be heard in her clear tones and rhythm.
