XAN CAMPOS ESD (GALICIA)
ESD is the new project of Galician pianist and composer Xan Campos (Cangas de Morrazo, 1987). Moving forward from his previous projects, he presents now a new band, a quartet with a new sound which represents an evolution towards a more electric sound and mixing with jazz-rock and seventies psicodelia with a more organic approach.
Campos, who is already a reference name within the music scene in Galicia, decides here to move away from the acoustic piano to explore new sounds using other instruments which will offer different tones and timbres. The result is transgressive and very original.
Campos understands jazz not just like a music style but more like a way of understanding music and a door to new experiences.
ESD is an original quartet without a bassist, formed by two guitarists Virxilio Da Silva and Wilfried Wilde, drummer Iago Fernández, and Xan Campos with a Rhodes keyboard and synths. The experience and talent of these four musicians translates into a very interesting and distinctive new sound.
Without forgetting or renouncing to the basis of jazz, with ESD Campos aims for a more up to date style, innovative, allowing influences from his cultural and social environment and the new music avant-garde. The project is structured between the more rock sounding compositions on one side and the free, more improvised and psychedelic pieces.
Xan Campos studied the Permanent Jazz Seminar in Pontevedra, at the Musikene in the Basque Country and he took the European Jazz Master. After more than a decade with his Xan Campos Trio and collaborating with renowned names such as Ambrose Akinmusire, Walter Smith III, Logan Richardson, Marcus Strickland, Lage Lund, Marcus Gilmore, Perico Sambeat, Jorge Rossy or Matt Brewer, he starts now with ESD a new phase which will allow him to evolve and move forward in his career as a jazz player and composer.
