MATS EILERTSEN (NORWAY)
Mats Eilertsen (Trondheim, 1975) is one of the finest and most distinct bass players on the Norwegian jazz scene of today. His skills and musical maturity make him the perfect trio member. He has a special warm and lyrical way of treating the bass, being steady and experimental at the same time, bringing it all together and yet showing openness, willingness, and constantly searching for new sounds.
He studied at the Jazz Conservatory in Trondheim, where he participated in the Jazz program and was part of a jazz band along with other fellow students.
Eilertsen can also be heard as a member of the three ECM-asociated groups Tord Gustavsen Ensemble, the Source, Wolfert Brederode Quartet. He has participated on numerous recordings and has also had the opportunity to perform with international stars such as Pat Metheney, Joshua Redman, Lee Konitz, Bobo Stenson, Kenny Wheeler, Tomasz Stanko, Arve Henriksen, Solveig Slettahjell, Sonny Simmons.
In the project he presents at the festival, Eilertsen is joined by Thomas Strønen, founder and leader of the norwegian/british band Food, with british sax player Iain Ballamy, also member of Humcrush, a duo with keyboardist Ståle Storløkken, and known also for other projects like Pohlitz. The trio is completed by dutch pianist Harmen Fraanje, who according to the North Sea Jazz Festival can be counted among the most prominent jazz pianists of the Netherlands. In Mallorca we had the chance to enjoy his live performance in last year’s Alternatilla Jazz festival, when he played with the trio Reijseger Fraanje Sylla. In just under ten years’ time, he has built an impressive musical career, the end of which is nowhere in sight. Fraanje’s music has many layers. His musical muses are many, as are the numerous collaborative efforts he has undertaken. He is able to surprise with a true musical kaleidoscope of jazz, world and classical music. Not surprising that his name is connected with a number of trend-setting groups, such as that of Eric Vloeimans or American saxophonist Michael Moore. Harmen performs creating an authentic sound where an outpouring of improvisational brilliance is guided by a fearsomely dedicated technique.
